Sarah Roth, Violin
Sarah Roth is one of the newest members of the Oregon Symphony, having joined the orchestra during the 2004-2005 season.
She grew up in Chelmsford, Massachusetts (near Boston), listening to her parents practice music at home. Her mother is a pianist and her father, a violist. At the age of six, already studying piano, she didn't quite knkow what to think when they handed her a violin. But, by age age 13, rehearsing Brahms’ Symphony No. 4 in youth orchestra, she knew that “this is serious.“ Sarah was attending the New England Conservatory Preparatory School where she studied with Marylou Speaker Churchill and Eric Rosenblith. She graduated with distinction in performance from the New England Conservatory of Music, as a student of James Buswell, and has distinguished herself in both orchestra and chamber music.
Sarah has been a member of the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra, and, for two years, performed with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and the Opera Theatre of St. Louis. For five years Sarah was the violinist with the Mark Morris Dance Group, performing in Boston, Seattle, Los Angeles, London, Genoa, Lisbon, Honolulu, Brooklyn Academy of Music, and Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival. With MMDG Sarah premiered several new works, including the east coast premiere of Rhymes with Silver by Lou Harrison, with Yo-Yo Ma.
With Boston’s Emmanuel Music, she has performed more than 100 cantatas of J.S. Bach, and appeared as a soloist, orchestral, and chamber musician in Emmanuel’s major productions of Bach, Handel, Mozart, Brahms, and Schubert. Also as a member of Emmanuel Music, Sarah recorded Bach Cantatas BWV 82 & 199 with Lorraine Hunt Lieberson. The cantatas were staged by Peter Sellars and conducted by Craig Smith, and performed in Boston, New York, Paris, London, and Lucerne. She was the violinist in the Peter Sellars/Craig Smith production of Weill and Bach: Mahagonny Songspiel, and Conversations Between Fear and Death, presented in Paris and Frankfurt.
Also in chamber music, as a Tanglewood Music Center Fellow, Sarah performed extensively in chamber music groups coached by Joel Smirnoff, Peter Serkin and Yo-Yo Ma. She has played with Cantata Singers and the First Works Trio.
