William Ofstad, Bass

Bill began as a pianist, taking lessons twice a week for 12 years, eventually performing several concerts as soloist with the Seattle Symphony. He earned a degree in music from the New England Conservatory of Music, where he was on a full piano scholarship.

Attending many Boston Symphony concerts, Bill became very interested in the bass and began studies with Tiny Martin. “I enjoy the supporting nature, teamwork, and dark sound of the bass section. The other players have been my best friends for the past 30 years.”

Bill joined the Oregon Symphony in 1968, and he still remembers his first rehearsal; the conductor, Jacques Singer, pointed him out after the first 20 bars, stopped the entire orchestra and said, “Hey you, that was not very good!” Fortunately, it has been uphill since then.

In addition to his music, Bill has had a paint contracting business since high school and owns hotels in Washington. His wife, Sandra, is also his business partner. When not a musician or businessman, he builds on his house, which he has been working on for 16 years and “can't seem to get finished.”

Music Director and Conductor James DePreist has made the Oregon Symphony enjoyable for Bill. “I like the way he makes it possible to play the music; he creates a mood that brings out the best in each musician.” Bill also finds Mr. DePreist to be extremely articulate.

At home, Bill has two teenage boys and enjoys his pets: two Chihuahuas (Solo and Bobby), a Cherry-head Conure and a cat. Finally, he says, he likes to dine out after concerts — especially when retired bassist Dick Mansfield picks up the tab.

Bill plays a Gagliano Bass, 1713 Italy.
