Jennifer Craig, Harp
She was one of seven children, so when five-year-old Jennifer repeatedly begged her mother for the miniature toy harp she had seen, it was with diffused attention that her mother misunderstood Jennifer’s desire and showed her a real harp. To avoid being stubborn, upon being asked if that was what she wanted to play, Jennifer kindly agreed.
Lessons began at age seven, and Jennifer soon began to really like the instrument. At 11, she became the youngest member of the Portland Junior Symphony and began soloing at 15. In 1970, she toured Europe as a soloist for the group, performing Ravel’s Introduction & Allegro. When she returned she began work with the Oregon Symphony, becoming principal harpist at age 19. This is her 32nd season.
She has appeared with the orchestra as soloist on several occasions, most recently performing the Gliere Harp Concerto. Since 1991 she has also performed as Principal Harpist and soloist with the Oregon Bach Festival. Jennifer has appeared as soloist with the Peter Britt and Sun River Festivals Orchestras, the Mt. Angel Bach Festival, the Oregon Mozart Players and the Cascade Festival of Music. She has also performed as Principal Harpist with the International Music Festival and Chamber Music Northwest.
